Did you know that 58% of dogs that are euthanized in the US Shelter System are Pit Bulls? Bruised Not Broken, a New York City based advocacy group, has been working for the past three years to improve this statistic. In addition to getting dogs off the euthanasia list – Bruised Not Broken‘s work is focused on changing peoples’ perceptions about this misunderstood breed.

Simply put, they love the breed and want to give them a brighter future.

Meet Pete and Lily, two gorgeous Bloodhounds that went from rescue pups to Broadway stars. Prior to starring in the classic tail, A Christmas Story, this dynamic duo were abandoned, tied to a tree, without shelter, food or water, until Ontario Bloodhound Rescue came to their rescue. Pete and Lily are now living the high life as Broadway stars and pamper pooches.

Bloodhounds are such an awesome breed that Pete and Lily are not the only homeless hounds to find stardom with Ontario Bloodhound Rescue. Hoss, found in deplorable condition was picked up as a stray. After much TLC Hoss was adopted, then shortly thereafter he was chosen to debut his acting talents in a soon-to-be-released music video for the Ontario band Walk Off The Earth. Hoss plays the part of a deputy’s sidekick for the song “Gang of Rhythm” from their E.P titled R.E.V.O.

Ontario Bloodhound Rescue can’t guarantee every adoptable bloodhound will become a star, but they know they will all be shining stars in the hearts of their adopters.

When an artist sits down to create a t-shirt in support of one of our rescue groups they go through a rigorous process of blending relevance, style and aesthetic appeal. Jillian Adel is no exception. A few weeks ago Winter Blue was brought to Husky House – a dog rescue in New Jersey. He was in really bad shape: his hip and leg were shattered and his collar was embedded in his neck. Husky House made the decision (despite the enormous vet bill that would result) to send Winter Blue directly into surgery. The vet worked for hours and was able to repair his broken bones and mend his injured neck. Today Winter Blue is resting and getting stronger and, with a little luck and lots of love, he will make a full recovery.

A little over 3 years ago, in Derwood, Marlyand, while out on a walk with a little boy, Jasmine ran away. Despite the efforts of her family and the community at large, Jasmine could not be returned home. She lived in the woods and loved to spend her time patrolling geese on the neighborhood golf course. Often times she would approach humans, but only long enough for them to ponder the possibility of catching her, and then she would run off.  That was until 2 months ago.

On May 26^th Jasmine, still beautiful and full of life, decided that it was time to abandon the street and move her life inside. She literally walked into the home of a neighborhood resident and hasn’t tried to separate herself from humans since.

Today she is in foster with Treasured K9s – a New Jersey based nonprofit focused on rescuing and rehabilitating Korean Jindo dogs. With the help of a behavioral trainer, and the love of her new foster family, Jasmine is slowly learning to trust people and, in time, she will be put up for adoption.

Anna has been with Brooklyn Animal Action (BAA) for the past few months and, despite being super cute and affectionate, people are skipping over her adoption profile. BAA believes the reason for this is because she has FIV (Feline Immuno-deficiency Virus) –  a slow virus that affects a cat’s immune system over a period of years. The truth is FIV isn’t a big deal – and cats that have the virus can actually live long, normal lives. The virus is not transmittable to humans or other non-felines – and only in EXTREMELY rare circumstances can it be transmitted to another cat. Curious to know a little bit about Anna – the sweet girl on this week’s Brooklyn Animal Action tee? Since you’re reading this I’m going to assume the answer is yes and jump right in

Anna is a 1 1/2 years old tabby that is spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all of her shots. She currently has FIV but, contrary to the popular misconception, having FIV isn’t a big deal. All it really means is that she’s immune deficient and should be kept indoors (a standard of life recommended for all companion animals, FIV positive or not). She gets along with other cats and even likes dogs.

Here is a little bit of what Claire, Anna’s foster mom, has to say about the friendly feline:

“Anna waits at the door to greet me every time I come home! She can’t wait to be played with, she is such a great companion and loves to be around people. She will never hide or shy away from you or your friends, she is very social and loves to be the center of attention!!!!

Anna is lovely and she knows it! She is quite diligent about her grooming and is always ready for her close up!! She sleeps at the foot of the bed and is so tender when she uses her little paw to wake me up. After breakfast she sits in the sunny windowsill and stretches out, it is so cute! While Anna enjoys gazing outside, she has NO interest in going outside because she is so happy being in a warm loving home!

Sweet little Anna was found in Bushwick, Brooklyn and was clearly abandoned – otherwise how could you explain her extremely sweet temperament? She was very friendly from the first time we met her and just did not want to be outside anymore. Her gratitude for bringing her in is evident in her sweet nature, love she gives and the way she looks at you. She is not a demanding kitty, she is independent but loving and so wonderful to have in the house. She is fine with other kitties or alone and even likes dogs!”

Our pals at Grateful Greyhounds Inc. need your help! This beautiful greyhound, Murphy, has been with the organization for about 9 months. He is a bit shy and has an eye condition called Panus (totally manageable w/ inexpensive eye drops), but he is very sweet and in need of a loving family to welcome him into their home.
