TNR stands for “Trap-Neuter-Return”, and is a method of humanely trapping unaltered feral cats, spaying or neutering them, and releasing them back to the same location where they were collected. TNR is promoted by the ASPCA as a humane and more effective alternative to euthanasia for managing and reducing feral cat populations. If you want to learn more go here.
Even though I had already handled 42 cases (from my one street block!) by the time I became certified, I wish I had taken it sooner. Reading about how to do it on-line pales in comparison to in-room training and demonstration.
TNR certification opens the door to very low cost veterinary services for these animals, but the quality of care is not compromised. If anyone is feeding cats already, TNR is an easy next step. Please take it!
Ditto on Kathryn’s previous comment. New Yorkers who are interested in helping the stray/feral/community cats in their area should become Certified TNR Caretakers by taking the Neighborhood Cats workshop. Once certified, they can take advantage of free or low-cost spay/neuter, free trap loans, food and straw giveaways, cat/trap transport, kitten care and taming workshops, and other services provided by the NYC Feral Cat Initiative, ASPCA, Maddie’s Fund, The Humane Society of New York, and other organizations.
